Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi hits out at England’s Tom Curry after heated tunnel clash

Felipe Contepomi accused ‘s of a physical confrontation in the tunnel after a ‘reckless’ challenge on Juan Cruz Mallía in s 27–23 loss at the Allianz Stadium. 

The Pumas full-back was forced off with a suspected knee injury following the first-half collision, which Contepomi felt should have been reviewed by officials. 

The Argentina head coach alleged Curry, below, made contact with him as players and staff left the field after a tight Test that England only secured in the quarter.  

Speaking on the scuffle, Contepomi said: “I’m 48 years old and when he came into the tunnel, he hit me on the chest – a shove.

Poor behaviour

“Maybe that’s his nature, I don’t know him. But after an action that injures a player’s knee, the minimum is to be humble enough to say sorry. He did the opposite.” 

He added that Curry’s behaviour was not compatible with Test rugby and while saying that the sport is rewarding poor behaviour. 

The Argentine coach said: “If rugby wants bullies, then maybe that’s the way it’s going.” 

England defended Curry’s character, with head coach insisting the flanker’s behaviour is “impeccable” and brushing off claims of misconduct. 

The Pumas boss was equally critical about the heavy tackle by Curry and said: “I don’t know if you call it reckless or slightly late, but two weeks ago we had a decision made because of the consequence.  

“If that’s the criteria, I don’t understand how we ended up playing with fourteen and England stayed with fifteen – and it wasn’t even checked.”

Respectful

Argentina believe Mallía may face a lengthy spell on the sidelines and the Argentine speculated an ACL injury was on the cards for the fullback. 

declined to comment on refereeing decisions but distanced his player from the allegations.  

Borthwick said: “I’m aware there was an incident, but I didn’t see it. I wouldn’t want that to overshadow a hard

“He’s a respectful man and a fantastic team-mate.” 

The England captain also defended the flanker saying it was a game of high emotions and stressed that his team have a large amount of respect for Argentina.  

Despite the controversy, the Argentina coach said his team could take value from running England close.  

Contepomi said: “There are things we did well and things we didn’t – at this level, small details matter – we will learn from it and keep improving.”
