Late drama as leaders hit back in added time

THE leaders were pushed all the way by Swansea and had to rely on two tries in added time to hold onto their unbeaten recorded and turn what looked like being a 17-12 defeat into a bonus-point win.

After a number of missed chances, it was a brilliant break from visiting skipper Matt O'Brien that paved the way for the opening score from wing Ioan Davies. Swansea thought they had replied when centre Kieran Charles broke through the middle and sent scrum-half Connor Tantum in at the posts, only for it to be chalked off for a forward pass.

Nevertheless, James Davies' penalty and conversion of Josh Carrington's 60m try saw them ahead 10-5 at half-time.

Newport No.8 Lennon Greggains came up with a try that Will Reed converted but their second half efforts were hampered by two yellow cards – George Young in the 50th minute for killing the ball and then Jon Morris 15 minutes later for a dangerous tackle.

Swansea scored a second try when hooker Owen Thomas powered out of a tackle to race 30m and find scrum-half Liam Seaward in support who crossed for the try that Liam Popham improved to make it 17-12 with three minutes to go.

Then came those late tries from Davies and O'Brien to earn Newport the five points.
