Bath set to opt for hybrid surface at new Rec

NEWS EXTRA

have unveiled their stunning plans for a new 18,000-seater stadium that they hope to have moved into by the start of the 2021- 22 campaign.

The club have entered the final stages of consultation on their plans for the stadium, which will be built on, and replace, the club's current Recreation Ground.

Previous plans have been shot down by local residents and legal wrangles.

The city's status as a Unesco World Heritage site has impacted the battle to redevelop the venue.

The new permanent stadium will be shifted 50 metres away from the waterfront, which will be regenerated with cafes and bars.

The new playing surface is also likely to be an artificial Desso surface and built above a 600-800 capacity underground car park.

Such a project is likely to cost between £60-£80m and home matches would need to be played on an alternative site for around one and a half seasons.

“We're looking at the different options and looking for a surface that can be used by the community 365 days a year,” Bath chief executive Tarquin McDonald said.

“We're considering an artificial surface, but at the moment a hybrid surface, such as Desso, is the frontrunner.

“One of the things that makes the Rec such a special place to play rugby is the location in the heart of the city and the community “It was important for us to have a design unique for this space.”

Meanwhile Springbok Francois Louw's international future will play a part in negotiations for a new contract with Bath.

The flanker's three-year deal ends next summer.

Louw joined from the in 2011 and his game time for the club has been restricted by international duty and injury.

He wants to play at the in next autumn. After that, by which time he will be 34, whether he retires from internationals or not could have a bearing on whetherhe remains a Bath player.
