Caldy …………….15
Esher ………………7
CALDY came out on top in a dour affair affected by the days of incessant rain that left the normally fast and dry pitch resembling a quagmire.
Neither side looked like scoring until Caldy fly-half Rhys Hayes put up a pin-point cross-field kick for flyer Nick Royle to latch onto and go in at the corner, full-back Gavin Roberts converting to send Caldy in 7-0 up at the break.
Caldy were on top in the forward exchanges but it was tight and a few flash points could have seen the game boil over if the mud and the rain hadn’t kept the temperature under control.
In the home pack Derek Salisbury, Tom Sanders and Harrison Crowe provided the focus and it was a burst from the latter that eventually put Gavin Roberts in at the corner for Caldy’s second try.
The home side scored again from a Roberts penalty before Esher picked up a consolation score with the last play of the game through former Caldy prop Matt Lowes. Caldy were deserved winners in this attritional affair, with the power of their pack, a tremendous defensive effort across the team and some touches of quality play by their backs being the difference.
The result leaves Caldy level on points with Esher in the league table.
