Liebenberg leads rearguard action

Macclesfield..24

……36

MACCLESFIELD must be sick of the valiant loser tag, but as has been the case too often this season, it was the case again against Cambridge.

In the 11th minute, the Cheshire side found themselves in the visitors' 22 and from a scrum Dave Marwick latched on to an offload to score in the corner.

The home side had their tails up, and Marwick scored his second from a maul, putting the Blues 12-0 up after 18 minutes.

With their first visit to the Macc 22, Cambridge managed to maul captain Stefan Liebenberg over to score in the corner on 24 minutes before No. 8 Tom Nutley added a second a minute later.

Winger Lewis Winterbottom hit back moments later, but opposite man Oli Petrides went over for a simple score to leave the sides tied at 19-19 at the break.

The home side came out strong in the second half, with fly half Lewis Barker putting his troops in space frequently, but it was Jack Green who struck with a penalty on 57 minutes.

Macc moved ahead with a bonus point try from Joe Palmer but from then on in, it was all Cambridge.

Liebenberg and Albert Portsmouth going over in the final ten minutes as Cambridge powered to a vital win.
