Vare’s try ultimately proves vital in low-score affair

This was tight, as the score suggests. Neither side ever looked comfortably in control. Even when Chester went two scores ahead – just – after 63 minutes a Sheffield comeback was always on the cards. In essence both sides had hard-working, stubborn defences which scrambled well even when the opposition managed a break or half-break.
Hence, exciting attacks succumbed to a succession of knockons, turnovers and dropped passes.
