A MISSED conversion in the final two minutes cost Henley Hawks the chance to leapfrog their opponents in the league as Canterbury held on. In a see-saw game, Canterbury went ahead, before Hawks hit back to lead 19-5 at the break.

Canterbury then scored 20 unanswered points, meaning that George Jackson ‘s missed conversion allowed the home side hold on.

Jamie Stephens crossed for the first try of the game on four minutes, with Oliver Best missing the conversion, before a Bradley Cook effort, converted by Jackson, gave Hawks the lead before ten minutes had been played.

Further tries from Sam Portland and Liam O ‘Neill, the former converted by Jackson, saw Hawks lead 19-5 at halftime. Harry Sayers hit back in the first minute of the second half, though, and, when Stephens ‘ second of the game was supplemented by a Best penalty, Canterbury were ahead. Barney Howard got the all-important home try on 72 minutes and, despite Best missing the conversion, Canterbury were not to be denied the win.

Robert Bell touched down with two minutes to play, taking his side to within a point of Canterbury, but Best ‘s miss from the tee condemned Hawks to defeat.
