It was billed as a titanic head-to-head between Owen Farrell and George Ford but in truth rugby, a game involving 30 players on the pitch, is rarely like that. And so it proved.
Both England fly-halves – mates for the best part of 15 years – denied pre-match that it was a straight shootout and of course they were right, a fly-half is only as good as the pack in front of him and the delivery his scrum-half partners can provide.
