U16 Colts
WELLINGTON College secured their first U16 title since the pandemic, beating Millfield in an enthralling final. The quarter finals saw eventual champions Wellington College make an early statement against a much fancied George Watson’s College side, winning 33-7. Meanwhile, Millfield were in similarly ominous form with a 41-5defeat of Marlborough College, while Stowe were looking tasty too, fresh off the back of their Schools Sports Magazine U16 Cup triumph, winning 38-12 against Ipswich. St Joseph’s College showed their quality, beating Sedbergh 17-12.
They showed it again during the semi-finals, but Mill-field found a way, as they so often do, to victory with a late 28-26 effort to see them into the final.
In the other semi-final, Stowe threw everything they had at Wellington College, but once again, the Berkshire side just had too much and sealed a 21-12 victory.
Come the final, the Wellington College confidence was sky-high as they raced out to an early lead through a penalty try and No.8 Will Courtney rounding off a fine campaign to touch down.
Freddie Corbitt continued the Wellington avalanche for a 19-0lead before half time, but Millfield hit back through two quickfire scores that brought them within a converted score.
However, Ralph Sheehan pounced on a loose ball to race away and provide the final score as Wellington triumphed 26-12 to return to the top of the U16 game.
