Advances made in broadcast technology, where anyone can record and rewind, means that the evidence is there for any controversial incident during a match to be examined – whether it’s by armchair viewers at home, or fans in stadiums looking at big screens, or their counterparts in pubs and bars.

There’s instant debate and argument, which can then become more considered and detailed, but it’s out there - and it has been ever since television coverage of sport began.
