I would not read too much into the 25 players given England central contracts because, the more I look at the system, the more it feels like a money-saving exercise rather than some definitive indication of Steve Borthwick’s World Cup plans.
When the list came out, there were a few names that surprised me.
George Ford being included was one, because England have Fin Smith and Marcus Smith around that position and you naturally wonder what that says about where Steve Borthwick sees Ford fitting in over the next couple of years.
