Attacking full-back Lacaze was ahead of his time

FRANCE’S reputation for producing vibrant attacking full-backs almost matches their ability to uncover and nurture commanding Napoleonic-like scrum-halves and that tradition at 15 probably dates back to the arrival Claude Lacaze, right, who died this week aged 85.

Lacaze – who won 33 caps during the ’60s when playing for Lourdes, Angouleme and Racing – was the fi rst French full-back to score a Test try and his eye for the gap and ability to enter the line between centre and his wing created many a try.
