By the end of it, Workington Town’s signing from Cardiff had touched down into the history book, his 41 tries adding up to the most scored post-war by a Union player during his debut season in League.
That the season in question, 1962-63, coincided with the UK’s coldest winter for more than 200 years, made his achievement all the more improbable.
