The NPC season got underway this morning. An iconic competition filled with fantastic teams.
Heading into the season, Canterbury look to be the clear odds-on favourites.
However, there is an abundance of teams chasing their crown.
Among the leading contenders are Taranaki, with the bookmakers making them the second favourites to lift the title.

A brief history of Taranaki
Taranaki is a great club with a sensational history.
In 1889, the Taranaki Rugby Federation was formed; it didn’t take long to see their impact on New Zealand rugby.
In 1905, Taranaki had six players representing their nation; notably, Jimmy Hunter scored 41 tries during that tour.
The club’s history is defined by sustained success, with numerous Ranfurly Shield reigns standing as a testament to its enduring excellence and proud rugby tradition.
They would go on to be a consistent presence over the years. Taranaki became NPC champions in 2023.
With a rich history, they will look to add another chapter.
How did the region fare in 2025
It was a solid year in 2025 for Taranaki.
They finished fifth with six wins and four losses, amassing 32 points and scoring 44 tries, making 86 line breaks, which was fourth in the league.
These stats tell the story of a team that can create opportunities, and if the conversion rate can be improved, they can cause serious problems.
Their defensive work was just as influential, with 1,939 tackles, 71 turnovers won and 132 line-outs secured, highlighting their physicality and discipline.
There are a lot of promising signs, but some improvements can be made.
How are they shaping up for 2026?
The squad is the perfect blend of talent and experience.
Kaylum Boshier, Bradley Slater and Logan Crowley form the leadership group.
Some fresh faces, including Suli Pahulu, Chris Vunipola and Rocky Olsen, will be looking to make an impact.
The Barrett brothers have been named in the squad, along with experienced operators such as Adam Lennox.
Jarrod Hoeata will be aiming for success as head coach, and the bookmakers believe they have a chance.
The odds
Taranaki come into the season at odds of 9/2; they have the talent to upset Canterbury, who come into the competition at 5/2.
The team will be looking to compete on both fronts: the NPC and the Ranfurly Shield.
Hoeata should be confident that his side can win. Furthermore, you would see a decent return if you backed them.
The foundations are in place for another exciting campaign.
With a talented squad and lofty ambitions, Taranaki have every reason to believe this could be a season to remember.
