ITALY kept their semi-final hopes alive with a clinical victory over Japan, condemning the Brave Blossoms youngsters to a second successive defeat in Pool B.
Both teams arrived desperate for a first win after opening-round defeats, and it was Japan who edged a fiercely contested opening period despite trailing 17-11 at the interval.
Fly-half Takeru Niwa opened the scoring with a penalty before Italy responded through David Luisato, whose converted try put the Azzurrini ahead.
