Time to provide a better defence

WHEN Super Rugby began in the southern hemisphere in the 1990s, its high scores were castigated for seeming to treat defence as an optional extra. A similar point was made by some ill-informed commentators about rugby league.
Now look at English rugby. Four ‘Prem’ matches on April 25 totalled 269 points, i.e. over 67 per game. Some of the leagues below the Prem also seem to have neglected the basics of defence. Consider these scores from the week before.
