England scrum-half Alex Mitchell is braced for a fierce response from Scotland when the old rivals collide on Saturday, with the Northampton No.9 anticipating a hostile atmosphere and a wounded opponent desperate to bounce back.
Gregor Townsend‘s side head into the fixture on the back of a shock defeat to Italy in Rome.
That result that has intensified scrutiny north of the border of Townsend, and Mitchell believes that setback only heightens the challenge facing England, who kickstarted their campaign with a seven-try demolition of Wales.
“I think it’s going to be a tough Test match, as it always is with them,” Mitchell told Sky Sports. “They’re a quality side and they’re hurting from the result last week against Italy, so we know they’re going to come firing out of the blocks in that first 20 minutes.”

Fast start needed
Rather than focusing on Scotland’s struggles, Mitchell insists England’s priority is their own execution, particularly their start to the contest.
He said: “We need to look after ourselves, our own performance, have a really good first half and hopefully get a decent result.”
Defeat often sparks a reaction, and Mitchell expects exactly that from Townsend’s men — especially with the added edge of home advantage.
“There’s going to be a massive reaction. That always happens after a loss. There’s frustration and you want to kick into the next game as soon as possible,” he said. “Going back home for them is going to be a massive boost.”
Murrayfield debut for Alex Mitchell
Saturday’s clash will also carry personal significance for Mitchell, who is set for his first appearance at Murrayfield.
He added: “I personally can’t wait. It’s my first time actually up at Murrayfield, so it’ll be a massive game. Hopefully we can go there, put in a performance and that’s all that matters.”
