Bristol back row Matthew Bowler has opted for a demanding five-month programme in South Africa to help accelerate his physical growth and sharpen the attributes needed to make the jump at the elite level.
The programme, known as SAS, is an intensive residential set-up based in Stellenbosch, combining a lengthy pre-season block with competitive fixtures against elite opposition, including Bulls U20s and provincial sides. It is a challenge Bowler, 18, signed up for long before his recent breakthrough moments with Bristol and England U19s.
