A class act from old Tiger Bay

CARL Smith arrived in Cardiff from St Kitts as a boy and survived the culture shock to make a name for himself in the ferociously tribal arena of Welsh club rugby, then the envy of Britain and France.
A carpenter by trade, Smith learnt the game at the famous CIAC’s (Cardiff International Athletic Club) in old Tiger Bay. Unlike some who had gone before him, notably Billy Boston, Johnny Freeman, Colin Dixon and David Willicombe, Smith stayed put rather than head north.
