THERE has been a recent call for the game of rugby to become a non-contact sport until the age of 18 and, while that seems like a way of getting more young players and perhaps even schools into playing the game, I’m not sure it is a good idea.
There are already a number of non-contact ways of playing the game with many clubs offering opportunities for all players to try those games including touch, tag and walking rugby. There are quite a few players that take part in those games as part of their rugby experience which in its way can only be a good thing.
