Nick Cain: At last! Welcome words reinforce value of jeopardy

One of the few signs of clear-thinking rugby union sanity this week came from Simon Gillham, the chairman of the Tier 2 board, when he championed the cause of a league system with jeopardy, contradicting RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney’s assertion that promotion and relegation “doesn’t currently work” in the English game.
Gillham stated that any agreement involving the Championship/Tier 2 clubs in a new league structure would rule out the Premiership being a closed shop.
