Brutal Barnes take win in Kent classic

BARNES and Canterbury met on a grey English day, and the rugby was limited as a result.

No scores in the opening 20 minutes underlined the nature of the game. It was Barnes who had the overwhelming share of ball and field position, but defences didn't break.

Kyle Beattie opened the scoring for Barnes with a penalty, before their forward power saw them carve out the opening try of the game for Cameron Ruddock.

Fran Reynolds, had a great day with the boot and Canterbury notched their first penalty minutes before half-time, leaving them 3-8 down at the break.

In the second half the tale was mostly the same. It was the Kent side that scored the opening points with a Reynolds penalty narrowing the gap to two. Ben Cooper then converted a Tyler Oliver break. Off the kick-off Barnes returned pressure and a try resulted with Matt Humphrey's going over. A second Barnes try of the half for Jacques Brich saw them extend the lead.

Frank Morgan got a try back for Canterbury to get them within two. The centre tearing down the wing to score converted by Reynolds. But a try for Paul Webb took Barnes to a bonus point and meant Canterbury get nothing.
