A good win but not a great performance, says Dowson

moved to third in the table with a sixth victory in seven, but director of rugby Phil Dowson was far from satisfied.

“It was a good win but not a great performance,” said the Saints' director of rugby. “Our discipline was an issue at the scrum and breakdown and we gave them a chance to win at the end having been 17 points up.

“They scored two of their tries when we were down to 14 men, but reacted well when they look the lead and we scored an excellent try to win the match.”

Northampton were forced to field four centres in their three-quarter line because of injuries and one of them, Tom Litchfield, scored the winning try.

“Tom has not played on the wing for a while and he did really well,” said Dowson. “It was another away win but we know we will have to play better.”

's director of rugby George Skivington was left cursing a slow start with Northampton scoring three tries in the first 22 minutes. He said: “It was very disappointing but we fought back well and in the end it was painful to lose. It showed things are starting to come together.”
