Litterick learned prop trade through Jones

Rising star: Rhys Litterick

AS a young tighthead learning the ropes, new Rugby prop Rhys Litterick could hardly have had a better mentor.

For the past couple of seasons, during his time at , he was coached by and legend Adam Jones.

Now, as he begins a new career chapter at the Arms Park, the 23-year-old is quick to acknowledge how much he benefited from working with the 95- cap Jones.

“He's one of those people you want to be coached by, when he's in your position,” he said. “He's a really good coach technically, especially one to one, a real good scrum coach.”

As for Litterick's favourite tighthead when he was growing up, you can probably guess the answer.

“It would have to be him, wouldn't it?” he replies. “He was a stand-out performer for Wales.”

Born in Chichester, West Sussex, Litterick grew up down the road in the village of Yapton and played his early rugby at RFC before making the big move to Harlequins in 2021.

But, as his Christian name suggests, he is Welsh-qualified, through his father Kevin, who is from Ogmore Vale, north of .

“My dad was always in my ear about Wales and we always used to come down here when I was younger to visit relatives,” he said.

“I've got family up in Ogmore Vale still, so I get to see them now when I've got time off training, which is nice.”

Explaining the summer move to Cardiff, he said: “Coming to Wales was always something that was in the back of my mind.

“It came up and it was a good opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone and try and push on with my career. All that's in my head at the moment is I just want to play rugby.”

His wish has certainly been granted on that front. With fellow tighthead signing Ciaran Parker suspended and Wales prop Keiron Assiratti sidelined by an ankle injury, Litterick has found himself thrown straight in at the deep end.

Making his URC debut as a replacement against the , he then had a further taste of Welsh derby action as he was handed the No.3 jersey for the trip to the last weekend nad again against the on Friday.

“It was really good,” he said. “I was obviously nervous, my first start running out, but I think the week before eased me into it a bit. I liked the confrontation, it was physical, I really enjoyed those derbies.

“I'm still young and I've got loads to work on, but I see my set-piece as my strong point.”
