Ireland edge Spain to earn WXV 3 promotion

Ireland launched a stirring second-half fightback to see off Spain 15-13 and claim top spot in WXV 3.

The clash between the two remaining unbeaten teams started badly for Scott Bemand's side, who lost flanker Edel McMahon to a yellow card inside two minutes. Spain made the advantage count when Aoife Dalton's loose pass was seized on by Claudia Pena.

Amalia Argudo added the conversion and then a penalty to open up a 10-0 lead, which was reduced in the 35th minute when Dannah O'Brien's penalty got Ireland on the board.

More Irish indiscipline saw Linda Djougang sinbinned for offside with the clock in the red as Spain applied serious pressure on the line, Argudo's penalty opening up a 13-3 halftime lead.

Ireland reduced the arrears on the hour when Grace Moore finished off a catch and drive. O'Brien's conversion meant the deficit was just three and the rolling maul again proved too strong to stop with five minutes to play, Neve Jones dotting down to win the match in dramatic fashion.

WXV 3 Round-up

Eleven different Fijians crossed as Kazakhstan shipped three figures for the second time in three WXV 3 matches.

Adita Milinia led the way with four tries while Merewairita Neivosa also scored a hat-trick as romped to a 118-0 success.

Atelaite Ralivanawa (2), Teresia Tinanivalu, Merewai Cumu, Luisa Tisolo (2), Evivi Senikarivi, Salanieta Kinit, Rusila Nagasau, Sereima Leweniqila and Ana Korovata all added their names to the scoresheet in a one-sided encounter.

Tisolo's 12 conversions took her individual points tally to 34 as Fiji finished with a flourish.

Despite a second heavy defeat in three games and finishing with a points difference of -221, Kazakhstan avoided dropping into a relegation play-off, which will instead feature Colombia after they slipped to a third straight defeat.

The South American side were beaten 21-5 by Kenya, who picked up their first win of the competition and finished fourth as a result.

Sharon Auma scored two first-half tries and Rose Otieno also crossed for the victors, whose haul was boosted by a drop goal and a penalty from the boot of Ann Ochieng.

Juliana Soto's 34th-minute score gave Colombia hope but they paid for too many handling errors and finish bottom of the pile.
