Phil was rightly proud as a Baa-Baa

THE sad news of the passing of Phil Bennett has cast a shadow over the game in the week when the Barbarians, for whom he starred on many occasions, are preparing to face England.
Phil was the perfect Barbarian who knew the ethos of the club and its then chairman, Micky Steel-Bodger, and embraced it totally, showing a level of skill that hasn’t been matched.
Even now, close to 50 years after the event, the try started by Phil in the 1973 Barbarians versus New Zealand game is regarded as the best ever scored.
