Bevan boy finds a helping hand from Shankland

APART from teaching Tony Jacklin everything he knew about winning Open championships as revealed in this column last week, Bill Shankland had so many other claims to fame that one had to be omitted for space reasons.
His eldest son, Bill, junior, tells the story: “We had a knock on the door one day shortly after the end of the war.
“We opened it to find a thinnish man with a suitcase in his hand. He said he was a merchant seaman and asked: ‘Is this Bill Shankland’s house?’” Shankland greeted him like a long-lost friend and promptly rang Leeds Rugby League...
