If only we’d followed football’s lead over expenses

AN interesting corollory to your History of Rugby series is that the FA, formed in 1863, allowed expenses and broken time payments which was necessary as Northern and Midlands clubs were forming.
When Blackburn Olympic beat Old Etonians 2-1 (after 17 minutes extra time) in the FA Cup final of 1883 accusations followed of Northern clubs paying a wage and bringing talented players in.
The FA was run by the Old Boys of public schools so Old Etonians, Wanderers and Carthusians et al were the top Southern teams.
