Champions finish top of their leagues

I COULDN’T agree less with Mr Fleming about the play-offs being fair and sensible.
In practically all other sporting league systems, played over a pre-determined number of games, the team that finishes top of the league are regarded as champions.
They may not be regarded as the best team for their style of play, etc., but if they have amassed the most points at the end of the season, surely they must be the champions? Many sides lose players when international competitions are being played.
