Refs have a better ‘feel’ for the game

AS A retired referee of some 15 years standing, I read with interest Chris Hewett’s article on referee suffering being a sign of the times.
It was clear to me that the introduction of the TMO would inexorably diminish a referee’s on-pitch authority. The inevitable scope creep of the TMO role and introduction of “bunker” style reviews has only served to further emphasise that diminution.
There is much in the laws of the game that requires interpretation and perhaps none more so than when it comes to foul play. Intent or otherwise is often more a subjective judge...
