Time to scrap Prem ring fence

NEWCASTLE are already adrift at the bottom of the Prem. Five matches played; five defeats, with a negative points difference of more than 150, i.e. over 30 points per game. But for the ring fence, Newcastle would -– and should – have been relegated last spring.
Even though they are the north-east’s sole representatives, Newcastle are not supported by the rest of the clubs in that part of the country. In the absence of a proper county stage, clubs such as Doncaster, Rotherham and Leeds have their own ambitions.
