Everyone is a number! That’s the easiest way

TONY Clifford-Jones makes an interesting observation regarding positional name changes over the years in last week’s paper.
My train of thought goes something like this.
There are eight forwards and seven backs. The tight forwards include the props and hooker (now there’s a contradiction!) in the front row. The lock forwards in the second or middle row. Three loose forwards make up the eight, two flank forwards who could be described as either in the back row with the No.8 or as part of the middle row of the scrum binding onto the locks .
