Maynard’s view on salary cap is insult to many great clubs

I TAKE issue with Coventry MD, Phil Maynard’s contention that salary cap proposals are splitting the game.
As he says, wealthy clubs can simply ignore the caps since penalties of loss of RFU travel contribution, limited grants and loan finance are paltry, in relation to a players’ wage bill in excess of £72,500, let alone £300,000. We have all seen clubs brought to their knees through overextending themselves to fund first team ambitions and many more that survive have done so with serious longterm damage to junior rugby and lower senior sides.
