They smashed Australia and totally outplayed the All Blacks. The England squad of 2019 looked to be heading for hero status until the bone-crushing Boks exposed some weaknesses in the final yesterday.
Until then these players would have been queuing up for eights and nines out of ten for their torunament performances.
Instead The Rugby Paper correspondent on the spot, Nick Cain, has been obliged to throttle back on his assessments.
They still make encouraging reading for lovers of the English game with some room for improvement over the next four years!
