Welfare worries hit 13-club proposal

PREMIERSHIP Rugby proposals for a 13-team league from season 2020/21 may be scuppered because of concerns over player welfare. RFU officials discussed the issue of enlarging the top-flight at a board meeting on Wednesday but The Rugby Paper understands questions remain over the number of games top players will play and the provision of mid-season rest periods.
Any changes for the 2020/21 season must be agreed by RFU Council members at their AGM on June 14 but with talks between the RFU, Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Players’ Association ongoing, time is running out.
