WALES are close to putting the future of their national squad in the hands of their dream ticket – Wayne Pivac and Stephen Jones.
Almost a year after short listing three candidates to succeed Warren Gatland as head coach after next year’s World Cup, the Welsh Rugby Union could make an announcement as soon as tomorrow.
The principal kingmakers, chairman Gareth Davies and CoE Martyn Phillips, have called a news conference in Cardiff to ‘update on matters relating Welsh rugby.’ They have been consistent from the outset in their timetable, that Gatland’s successor would be named this summer although he does not take over until towards the end of next year.
“I think it’s an easy decision for the Welsh Rugby Union,” the Scarlets’ former Wales and Lions superstar JJ Williams told The Rugby Paper. “‘If I was looking for a head coach, Wayne Pivac would be top of the list. He is the ideal man.
“Having been here for a few years, he understands the Welsh culture. That’s important. New Zealand coaches bring an edge in discipline and fitness but when they come here it takes them the best part of a year to understand what Welsh rugby is about.
