After 2,700 games, 90-year-old referee says: That’s my lot

FERDINANDO di Matteo, one of rugby’s oldest referees at the age of 90, hung up his whistle yesterday after 44 years in the middle – and almost 2,700 games.
His took charge of his final match as Wellingborough faced East Midlands select veterans’ team.
He now plans to use his experience to support the next generation of referees. “I will still be involved in the club,” he says. “On a Sunday morning the kids need a referee, if I can have a younger referee stepping in, I can help teach them.”
