Sale Sharks last night suffered a record 77-7 defeat at the hands of Toulouse as the French team avoided a shock Champions Cup exit by scoring 11 tries on their way to a crushing victory.
The 70-point hammering easily surpassed Sale’s previous biggest loss – a 58-8 defeat to Wasps in 2000.
Alex Sanderson’s side had already qualified for the knockout stages but have now dropped out of a home last-16 spot.
Victory for Sale would have knocked the six-time winners out, but that never looked likely as the Top 14 leaders scored three tries inside the opening 30 minutes.
