Van Zyl was cast out and never forgiven

HENNIE van Zyl, who had been the second oldest surviving Springbok behind Frik du Preez, died aged 89 earlier this month and, although now a long forgotten name in most rugby circles, he certainly made the headlines one way or another during his brief time in the spotlight.
A tall, powerful long-striding wing with a devastating swerve, van Zyl, below, clocked up 10 Test appearances between 1960-61, a considerable number in that era of few games, especially as that spell did not include an incoming Lions tour.
