Women’s World Cup audience on a high as records tumble

England's 69-7 win over the USA in the Women’s Rugby World Cup opener in Sunderland last Friday drew in a peak audience of 2.4 million on BBC1 and 600,000 on iPlayer.
In total, 4.6m viewers tuned in to the live coverage over the opening weekend, surpassing the entire reach of the previous World Cup, which attracted 3.7m viewers overall, including 1.8m for the final.
Scotland’s 38-8 win over Wales had a peak audience of 1.2m, while Ireland’s 42- 14 victory over Japan drew a peak audience of 534,000.
