JOY at Zimbabwe’s qualifying for the RWC2027 a couple of weeks back was tempered by the death of Des van Jaarsveldt, the first Zimbabwean to captain the Springboks in a Test match.
Van Jaarsveldt, right, who paved the way for fellow ‘Zimbo’ Bobby by Skinstad and Gary Teichman, was a singular character who has the rare distinction of skippering the Springboks in his only Test appearance against Scotland in 1960.
