Steve Borthwick’s wishful thinking of trying Alex Dombrandt in the centres

It emerged this week that Steve Borthwick is chasing a similar “interchange” mirage as Andy Farrell, with the England head coach flagging that No.8 Alex Dombrandt is capable of joining Ben Earl in providing cover at centre.
This is wishful thinking. Earl is a Test-class openside, a sub-Test No.8, and played at centre for a while at school. He has also covered there for England for short periods against Japan (2024), Italy and Wales (2025) – but only when they were comfortably ahead.
