THE churn at England U20 level goes on with coach Steve Bates apparently stepping down to ‘explore other rugbyrelated opportunities’.
Bates took the England U20s to two consecutive Junior World Cup finals in 2017 and 2018 – losing to New Zealand and then France – before taking them to a fifth place finish in Argentina this year. Bates had the deck stacked against him in 2017 and 2019 as a result of Eddie Jones promoting U20 players to the senior squad during the tournament.
