Herrero missed out on the Slam

NOT many players voluntarily give up their hard earned place in the French national team but that’s was Andre Herrero did back in the day, such was his disappointment at being overlooked for the captaincy.
Herrero, below, who died aged 87 last week, had been the France pack leader and star man up front for the previous four years but when Christian Darrouy stepped down as skipper at the end of that 1967 Championship winning season the selectors surprised everybody and went with Herrero’s Toulon club colleague Christian Carrère, the younger man.
