MONTPELLIER are interested in sounding out England back row Zach Mercer about a potential move to the Top 14 when his contract with Bath runs out at the end of the season that gets underway next weekend.
Mercer, 23, the son of former cross-code star Gary, has been targeted by Montpellier who, as we have reported, are one of several French clubs that are looking to temp English players across the Channel next season.
Les Cistes, who are bankrolled by Mohed Altrad, have been disappointing this season and new director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre has doubled his efforts to improve the squad for next season.
England U20 international captain Mercer is weighing up his options after appearing to have dropped off Eddie Jones' radar as it is two years since he won the last of his two England caps against Japan. Flanker or No.8 Mercer, who was born in Leeds when his father was playing Rugby League in West Yorkshire, made his debut for Bath four years ago after coming through the club's academy system.
He extended his contract until next summer in September 2018 and has not yet agreed new terms to take him beyond that which has given Montpellier hope they can lure him over.
Bath are keen for him to stay at The Rec. A move to France would, of course, end his immedaite hopes of an England career.
