McKenzie stars as Chiefs stay top with big win in Tokyo

WARRENGatland's Chiefs continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 43- 17 win over the Sunwolves in Tokyo.

Damian McKenzie played a major role, including scoring 11 points, proving he is back to his best having missed the and most of last season with an ACL injury.

The Sunwolves took the lead through Garth April, but the Chiefs soon seized control with tries from Solomon Alaimalo and Brad Weber.

Alaimalo and McKenzie combined for the latter to grab the Chiefs' fourth try, with Lachlan Boshier, Quinn Tupaea and Kaleb Trask grabbing the other tries for the New Zealanders.

Jaba Bregvadza and Shogo Nakano dotted down for consolation scores for the Sunwolves.

Hurricanes ended the ' unbeaten start to the season with Ben Lam running in two tries and Jordie Barrett kicking 13 points.

Lukhanyo Am's interception led to Michael Tambwe scoring the opening try for the Sharks after Barrett had kicked an early penalty. Wes Goosen and Ngani Laumape went over for the Hurricanes, and Tyler Paul got another back for the Sharks to see the sides level 17-17 at half-time.

But it was all the Hurricanes in the second half as Lam's double, plus a further try from Dane Coles and Barrett's goal-kicking sealed victory.

A last-gasp converted try from Teariki Ben-Nicholas saw the Highlanders snatch victory 23-22 away to the Brumbies in Canberra.

A hat-trick from Folau Fainga'a looked to have been enough for the Australians, but Jona Nareki hit back and in the closing stages replacement No.8 Ben-Nicholas crashed over, with Josh Ioane kicking the winning conversion to go with his three penalties.

Defending champions Crusaders rebounded from last week's loss to the Chiefs to extend their winning streak over the Blues to 11 matches with a 25-8 win at Eden Park.

Blues captain Patrick Tuipulotu grabbed the opening try but Crusaders hit back through their wing George Bridge, and further tries from flyhalf Richie Mo'unga and centre Jack Goodhue took the match away.

The Rebels won their first game of the season and sent the Waratahs crashing to their third consecutive defeat with a 24-10 victory in Melbourne.

Rebels winger Marika Koroibete scored the first try on 14 minutes. The Waratahs hit back with Harry Johnson-Holmes dotting down but former fly-half Matt Toomua was deadly in front of the posts and when Andrew Kellaway dived over after an intense 17- phase build-up with six minutes left there was no way back.

Centre Ruhan Nel scored the winning try in stoppage time to snatch a 33-30 victory for the against the .

Tries from Elton Jantjies and Dan Kriel looked to have sealed a comeback win for the Lions but Nel scored in the 81st minute to clinch a frenetic game.
