Lack of atmosphere: England v Italy in Newcastle

England’s final RWC warm-up match at St James’Park was spoiled for me by a stadium announcer described by Sky’s commentator as being ‘effervescent’ -1 think he was being ironic!
That’s a much milder term than I would have used, and it perfectly epitomised one of my pet hates about the modern game.
Sometimes there is a great atmosphere at a rugby ground, but on other occasions it simply doesn’t happen - that’s just the way it is, and it can be down to many factors, even the weathe...
