10-month season hits player welfare for six

THE rugby season used to begin on the first day of September and end on the last day of April, a perennial arrangement which allowed such notable all-rounders as Dusty Hare and Alastair Hignell to double up as county cricket professionals with Nottinghamshire and Gloucestershire respectively.
Next year’s campaign will be spread over fully ten months, starting in late summer and dragging on until the following summer. It kicks off with the Top 14 in late August and will last all the way to June 20 with the Premiership final.
