NEWPORT SALOP went top as they beat Sandbach 28-22 with a late try, edging on points difference above Scunthorpe, who were beaten for the first time this season at Luctonians. Sandbach had won only one of their opening five, but came out flying at Newport with three first-half tries, while the shellshocked hosts couldn’t get on the board, trailing 19-0 at half-time.
