The news – as yet unconfirmed, but so widely rumoured that it’s almost certainly true – that a couple of South African teams are set to join the PRO12, makes my heart sink.
The essence of a league is pretty simple: every team plays every other team, home and away, during the season, and at the end it’s clear which team is the winner.
Of course, when there’s a need for even more games, and for more money generation, you can add in some play-off stages, but even then the integrity of the league is maintained as only the top teams qualify.
